Jisu Kim presents her research on International Migration using Big Data Analytics
On May 26, 2021, Jisu Kim , a student belonging to the very first cohort of the PhD in Data science, discussed her dissertation entitled "Essays on International Migration using Big Data Analytics”, in the Data Science program.
The PhD in Data Science is a joint program Scuola Normale Superiore, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, the IMT School for Advanced Studies, the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and University of Pisa, coordinated by Professor Dino Pedreschi. Jisu worked under the supervision of Giorgio Fagiolo, Professor at Sant’Anna, , Fosca Giannotti, Director of ISTI-CNR, Hillel Rapoport, Professor at the Paris School of Economics, and Alina Sîrbu, Assistant Professor at University of Pisa. The committee members also included Luigi Ambrosio, Director of the Scuola Normale Superiore, Tuba Bircan, Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Francesca Chiaromonte, Professor at Sant’Anna, and Diego Garlaschelli, Associate Professor at IMT.
The goal of Jisu’s dissertation was to explore, using computational and data scence tools, various issues related to international migrations. She attempted to disentangle the complexity of migration phenomena by improving on existing analysis approaches and proposing different perspectives. In particular, Jisu has contributed to empirical analyses in this field, emphasising the implications of complex-network approaches for both cross-country comparisons and selected country case-studies, and delineating four different phases of migration trajectories that relate to intricate and emerging issues, namely:
• Journey: tracing the digital footprints of migrants [1]
• Stay: cultural change through migration [2]
• Interaction (after arrival): digital behaviour of migrants and natives [3]
• Influence: causal effects of the presence of migrants on voting behaviours of natives [4]
Jisu has recently joined Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) as a research scientist and plans to continue working on international migration.
